Protecting our work is important to designers, but it may not be easy to understand. Join ADAC on Friday, March 11th for an evening with Attorney Mark Leonard, partner in the law firm of Davis and Leonard LLP, for an overview of trademarks and copyrights. Tips from Mark will include how to common, but little known, trademark and copyright issues can impact design professionals in their business, registering and maintaining trademarks and copyrights, considerations when selecting trademarks and more.

The Next Generation of Design — The F.A.R.M Story
How do we inspire, yet work hand-in-hand with the next generation of design activists?

The Millennials (ages 18–30) are technologically savvy, participatory, positive, reluctant to criticize, and experiential. They have respect for the law and for authority, yet demand transparency and feel entitled. Many Millennials are interested in participating in sustainability movements, but only in a manner that nurtures these sub-cultural nuances.

Design is experiencing a paradigm shift. Designers are experimenting with more interactive ways of engaging participatory culture and democratizing making. The methods in which design engages the world is expanding. My work seeks to examine the role of the next generation of designers in catalyzing their generation’s social and environmental movements.

The F.A.R.M story will serve as one way to rethink traditional activist mediums (the poster and the protest) and the role of the design activist, in an effort to more fully engage the next generation of design.

Come join us and find out what some of our best local creatives are doing! David Danz, an illustrator of exceptional talent, and Jayson Carpenter, a photographer capturing unique images from around the world, will discuss what it’s like to be a creative in today’s fast-paced and digital world.

David Danz has been working as a freelance illustrator for the past 24 years. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, David first began illustrating in wood and linocut prints before abandoning his carving tools for scrapers and x-acto blades to accommodate the faster and more forgiving medium of scratchboard. Today he works out of his Placerville home studio, creating a variety of woodcut and wood engraved looking illustrations utilized in packaging, advertising, and editorial publications. His clients include the NY TImes, Chevron Oil, Wells Fargo Bank, Del Monte Foods, Coors Brewing Company and more. http://www.daviddanz.com/

Jayson Carpenter is a photographer currently based in Sacramento, specializing in humanitarian, advertising, editorial, and travel photography. His images have graced the pages of numerous national publications including Hour Detroit, Sunset magazine, and Running world. Some of his advertising campaigns include, South lake Tahoe tourism, The California Five a day, Save Mart and Safe banks and the NBA Sacramento Kings. While commercal work pays the bills, working with NGO’s and Non Profits fuels the soul.  After Four continents and over 20 countries later Jaysons sense of curiosity is still strong. In March of 2009 he returned from a fourteen-month journey thought much of Asia. There he worked on a book and shot for several non profits. Creating sites as a set of static HTML pages makes them hard for clients to update, often requires information to be changed in multiple places, and makes features such as RSS feeds impossible. The solution is to build the site around a database, but as a designer, you don’t want to deal with back-end technology.

Christopher Haupt, CTO of Webvanta, will explain the benefits of database-driven sites and show how the Webvanta hosted service makes this technology easily usable by designers without depending on a programmer. The session will conclude with an open discussion about the challenges web designers face and the various products and technologies that are available to help them.
