Happy Holidays from ADAC!

Happy Holidays and thank you for being a part of ADAC!

For those of you who made it to our event, By Hand & by Cam, with David Danz and Jayson Carpenter we thank you and hope it was a great experience. We are honored to have such excellent speakers who share their work, experience and stories. It was really incredible.

ADAC holiday treeAnother great effort ADAC took part in was the Holiday event Splendor of the Trees which benefitted The Gathering Inn charity for the homeless. ADAC built a beautiful art sculpture that lit up like a holiday tree and donated it to the Gathering Inn’s silent auction gala. The tree is currently being appreciated at a local school. The entire event earned over $50,000 to benefit the homeless.

Thanks again for a great start to the season to all our volunteers. Looking forward to 2010!

Former president Steve Mehallo has a new blog

If you’ve been missing ADAC’s old online Etc. newsletter, former club president Steve Mehallo is keeping the energy going with a new blog.

Mehallo had been involved with ADAC’s monthly newsletter for several years — compiling the Initial Caps column, writing prickly commentary and corralling as much art + design content as possible. He also used to post (mostly) daily design links on ADAC’s old home page.

Drop by http://mehallo.com/blog to see what he’s been up to.

And check out his new fonts over at MyFonts: http://tinyurl.com/mehallofonts

AND (featured recently on I Love Typography) his FONT Me mug – now available thru Zazzle: http://tinyurl.com/kol3jk

Typographic exhibit at the UC Davis Design Museum

The UC Davis Design Museum Presents:

TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION IN HANGUL

An exhibition of work by Hyunju Lee and Phil Choo

On view at the UC Davis Design Museum

October 4 – December 6, 2009

Guided tour with the designer and the curator

Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Design Museum, 145 Walker Hall, UC Davis

This exhibition presents typographic explorations in Hungul by two Korean Designers, Hyunju Lee and Phil Choo, and is curated by UC Davis Design Professor Mihyun Kang.

The designer’s typographic roots began with Hangul, the native script of Korea that was created in the mid-fifteenth century. The two-dimensional works introduce the form, pattern and emotion of Hangul typography as an expressive medium. The exploration and manipulation of Hangul characters offers a contemporary glimpse into Korean life and culture.

Hyunju Lee and Phil Choo were born and raised in Korea and then went on to pursue their graduate education in very different cultures. Lee studied visual communication in Japan receiving her MFA from Tama Art University in Japan and her PhD from Tokyo National University of Music & Fine Arts. She is currently an Associate Professor of Human Environment and Design at Yonsei University in Korea. Choo earned his MFA in graphic design from Iowa State University and is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Oklahoma State University.

AIA Central Valley building, 1400 S Street, Sacramento

Come join us and find out what some of our best local creatives are doing! David Danz, an illustrator of exceptional talent, and Jayson Carpenter, a photographer capturing unique images from around the world, will discuss what it’s like to be a creative in today’s fast-paced and digital world.

David Danz has been working as a freelance illustrator for the past 24 years. A graduate of Art Center College of Design, David first began illustrating in wood and linocut prints before abandoning his carving tools for scrapers and x-acto blades to accommodate the faster and more forgiving medium of scratchboard. Today he works out of his Placerville home studio, creating a variety of woodcut and wood engraved looking illustrations utilized in packaging, advertising, and editorial publications. His clients include the NY TImes, Chevron Oil, Wells Fargo Bank, Del Monte Foods, Coors Brewing Company and more. http://www.daviddanz.com/

Jayson Carpenter is a photographer currently based in Sacramento, specializing in humanitarian, advertising, editorial, and travel photography. His images have graced the pages of numerous national publications including Hour Detroit, Sunset magazine, and Running world. Some of his advertising campaigns include, South lake Tahoe tourism, The California Five a day, Save Mart and Safe banks and the NBA Sacramento Kings. While commercal work pays the bills, working with NGO’s and Non Profits fuels the soul.  After Four continents and over 20 countries later Jaysons sense of curiosity is still strong. In March of 2009 he returned from a fourteen-month journey thought much of Asia. There he worked on a book and shot for several non profits. Jayson will be sharing the fruits from his journeys. http://www.jaysoncarpenter.com/
